What is preeclampsia?

The arrival of a new baby is an exciting event. For most families in Maryland, this happy day comes and goes without incident. The medical professionals involved are generally highly dedicated and determined to ensure that you and your child receive the best possible care. Unfortunately, however, negligence has not been completely banished from the health service and sometimes mistakes are made with devastating consequences.

A pregnant woman faces many potential risks and complications. Most of these are very rare, but it is still vital to be aware of the possibilities and be on the lookout for any signs that something may be amiss. If you have any concerns about your health or that of your baby at any point in your pregnancy, you should seek medical attention immediately.

One complication that can be particularly dangerous if not correctly monitored is preeclampsia, as this article on birth injuries explains. In the United States, between five and 8 percent of pregnant women are affected by this condition. It is detected by identifying high blood pressure in the mother and protein in her urine.

Often, doctors will be inclined to deliver your baby as soon as possible to protect him or her from the dangers associated with this condition. However, if you are not far enough into your pregnancy, your blood pressure will need to be monitored, as will the blood flow to your placenta. You may also be given steroids to help ensure your baby's lungs are sufficiently developed in time for the birth.

Failure to manage this condition correctly can lead to the death of the baby and even of the mother. If you are concerned that the medical professionals attending your pregnancy failed you in some way, you might benefit from an attorney's advice. He or she may also be able to assist you if you decide to pursue a malpractice claim.
