Woman died after doctors fail to diagnose cancer

Although doctors in Maryland are usually diligent and professional, sometimes they still make mistakes. It is not always easy to determine the source of an illness, but when a serious condition goes undiagnosed, it can have serious repercussions for the patient. In some cases, misdiagnosis can even exacerbate the patient's illness, or allow it to progress to a point where treatment is no longer as effective.

In a recent case in Boston, a woman has sued her mother's doctor after he failed to diagnose the cancer that would later claim her mother's life. The patient had originally visited the hospital in 2006 as she was suffering from a persistent cough. She was diagnosed with a respiratory infection after an X-ray ruled out pneumonia. She was prescribed antibiotics as treatment.

However, her symptoms eventually worsened and 13 months later she was back in the hospital. A CT scan revealed that she had lung cancer which was already at an advanced stage. In August 2008, seven months after this, she died. A lawyer for the accused doctor stated that the interpretation of the 2006 X-ray had been appropriate. However, the woman's daughter had already been awarded $16.7 million in compensation for the failed diagnosis.

Patients in Maryland can sympathize with this family's loss, although the case occurred in a different state. Losing a family member is never easy, but the belief that their death could have been prevented is a difficult thing to come to terms with.

Furthermore, negligent medical professionals must be challenged in order to prevent them causing harm to anyone else. In these cases, an attorney can be particularly helpful. He or she can advise you on your options and may be able to help you procure compensation for your loss.
