Woman awarded $12 million for punctured colon

Placing yourself in the hands of medical professionals should not be a daunting prospect. Throughout Maryland, many doctors and nurses do their utmost to ensure their patients are adequately cared for. Nevertheless, errors still occur and can often result in long-term damage to the patient, or exacerbation of their condition. It is vital that needless harm of this nature be challenged so those responsible cannot continue to endanger their patients.

In a recent settlement, a Connecticut woman received $12 million after suing two doctors and the hospital where she was treated. This awarded amount came on top of an undisclosed amount one of the two doctors agreed upon prior to the trial. The 65-year-old had expected a routine hernia operation in 2008, when she became the victim of malpractice that would send her into a coma. During the procedure, one of the doctors allegedly punctured her colon. The damage was to be permanent, but it was also only the beginning of her worries.

She is reported to have been in a coma for a month, as well as requiring multiple surgeries. She developed an abdominal infection and also lost the majority of her large intestine. Today, her movement continues to be affected and she is unable to digest food correctly. After deliberating the case, a Superior Court jury found in her favor. However, hospital officials are said to be considering an appeal.

Although the award may help this woman cover her medical bills and other expenses resulting from the incident, she must live with her injuries. She may reside in another state, but her willingness to challenge malpractice is an example for patients in Maryland. If you find yourself in a similar position, be prepared to confront those responsible. Don't feel discouraged, as an attorney may be able to help you prepare your case and go after the compensation you deserve.
